TGIF... Yippee it's Friday! After a full week of dragging your worn out carcass to the office, trudging along for eight hours in front of the computer, and then coming back slipping into your gym attire and rushing off to work on those sickening love handles; you owe it to yourself to use your weekend to good effect and party all night. Let's face it, despite what you would have your parents believe what do these get-togethers and parties revolve around? Booze, of course. I understand, that there is absolutely no way you can avoid drowning yourself in beer on a weekend party. After all is exactly what their friends are doing. However if you are a bodybuilding enthusiast like me, you should treat your body as your temple. All throughout the week we strive so hard to eat right, take plenty of fluids, have regulars sleep patterns and of course work out. Isn't it weird that after putting in so much effort or five days a week, we end up drinking like a fish and get shit faced! There was a time when I too wasted no time to hit the bar, the second I hit the party scene. But that was before I realised exactly how much alcohol was hurting the efforts I was putting in the gym. I hope after you have gone through this article you we'll realise the detrimental effect alcohol has on bodybuilders and hopefully cut back on your drinking. Useless caloriesAlcohol is nothing but a whole lot of useless calories. It is absolutely devoid of any nutrients, but has the high calorie value (almost 8 cal per gram). A single shot of vodka contains almost 110 cal. Guys who are trying to lose weight should either give up drinking completely all learn to live with their paunch. That's because not only does the super high calorie content of booze add to your total calorie intake, it also lowers your metabolism rate thereby disrupting the kreb's cycle. When Kreb's cycle gets disrupted fats don't get broken down. To put it simply due to the amount of effort your body has to make to metabolise and digest the alcohol, fats don't get burnt.Dehydration of the bodyNot only does your muscle growth get affected due to hangovers but alcohol actually reduces protein synthesis by almost 20 per cent. That's a huge number. Consumption of alcohol results in muscle dehydration. As most of you are aware that their hydrated muscles offer an optimal anabolic environment that is so very necessary for the body to build muscles.when the cells of your body are not able to hold enough water it becomes extremely hard to build muscles. Alcohol also acts as a block disallowing the absorption of a number of important nutrients like potassium, phosphorus and iron. These are nutrients without which muscles simply can't grow.Lowers protein synthesisAlcohol actually reduces its testosterone levels in the body and increases estrogen. At your most intoxicated state your testosterone levels can plunge by almost 25 %. That is actually one of the reasons why guys tend to feel horny after getting drunk. Due to the drastic drop in your testosterone levels in such a short period of time your body's struggles to push it back by releasing large amounts of LH. However, LH is simply responsible for stimulating or arousing the built-up of testosterone. However since testosterone levels drop at the Leydig cell level instead of the pituitary level, LH released by the body does precious little in your testosterone built up. To put it simply you may feel ready to have a go at your girl but when it comes to performance, you just end up embarrassing yourself. ConclusionWhile I can't ask my reader to give up drinking, I would definitely request them to do it in moderation. After all, there's no reason to constantly lose the gains you've made in the gym for a few hours of inebriated fun. Cheers....hic…
